Resume Advice – It’s better to have a complete header

by admin on June 28, 2010

I’m a recruiter and I often help people with resume tips and job search advice. So if you’re job hunting, you may want to consider this:

A new trend that has popped up in the last year has been to not include a persons address and phone number on their resume.  I’m assuming that somewhere, someone, is advising people not to include this information when they submit a resume for a position.  As a recruiter, I’d have to say this is a HUGE mistake.

Consider this:  Companies use ATS (applicant tracking system) to track applicants for the position at hand and future opportunities.  If you’re an SWE in Los Angeles, and I get another great opportunity for an SWE in the area – I can pull your information up and contact you if you’re located close by.  Without knowing your zip code – my ATS can’t perform this operation for me.

“But I don’t want people knowing my address for identity theft reasons”.  A: Then don’t give your exact address. Just use your City, State, Zip Code.

Best Header:

Full Name
City, State, Zip
Phone ● Email Address

You’ll here all different things about the format of a resume, but when working with recruiters, this information needs to be on your resume.  Past that, you can see other areas that I’d like to see people consider as a solid resume tip.
